Our weekend ski challenge

Image
I think I was too exhausted to post yesterday, so am combining Saturday & Sunday. This has got to be the most challenging skiing I have ever done, with the flat light, fog and snow on top of ice. I think this was what Julie called survival skiing. The white out conditions were crazy, but I did survive! Today as I traversed some deep powder to get back on the run, I encountered some deep bumps and was launched forward right out of my skis 😂. And all I could think of was ‘please don’t let me dislocate my shoulders!’, luckily it was a soft landing, I just looked like a snow man when I got up ⛄️ 😅. We took a much needed break at this cute little hut, and then called it a day after about 3 hours. Rob thought it was a “fun day”, clearly we have very different definitions of  “fun” 😳.  Tomorrow we take a much needed break and head to Lienz, Austria.

Friday - On to Kitzbuhel

We were reminded this morning of one of the many reasons we love traveling to Europe - the food! We started our morning with a cappuccino and the scrumptious buffet. Then a quick bus ride to the bahnhauf to board our train to Kitzbuhel. Kitzbuhel is a small medieval town east of Innsbruck, in the western Austrian Provence of Tyrol. It is best known for the Hahnenkamm World Cup ski races. Our hotel is an easy walk to the town center. They clearly need more snow here as the only thing snow covered are the ski runs.😔. On our walk we met Helga a delightful and informative ski instructor / born again Christian, who enthusiastically shared information on where to ski, her faith and her sister’s address in Glenview Illinois! So tomorrow on Helga’s advice we will take the local bus to an area, she assured us will have great skiing.

Well we made it to Innsbruck, despite winter’s icy roads and delayed flights. As we descended from the clouds approaching Innsbruck we caught our first glimpse of the alps and they did not disappoint!  Once we arrived at our hotel, we were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco for me and a beer for Rob 🥂🍺, it was too late to take in the sights of Innsbruck, so we spent a quiet evening getting caught up on our sleep.

Tomorrow,  Rob & I will be leaving for a ski trip to the Dolomite Mtns in northeastern Italy. This area is the part of the Southern Limestone Alps of Europe. There are 18 peaks over 10,000 feet. So we are looking forward to this view. Our trip will actually begin in Austria, however. We fly into Innsbruck, and after an overnight, we will take the train to our first destination - Kitzbuhel.
